About Us

Sustainable Performance Solutions LLC (SPS) is a South Florida-based engineering firm with its practice focused on energy and sustainability consulting. SPS is partnered with com-ESCO, a Florida-licensed general contractor specializing in energy efficiency improvement projects for a comprehensive integrated experience.


The firm’s principal, Lawrence (Larry) Clark, previously served as Director of Corporate Business Development at Hill York – at that time, Florida’s largest independently-owned mechanical contractor – and was actively engaged with its Hygreen Energy Solutions group from launch in early 2008 until he formed SPS in September 2010. Clark’s previous experience includes such diverse assignments as president, vice president, and regional manager at MEPCO (formerly the Dunham Division of Dunham-Bush); and regional manager at Vapor Power, when it was part of Westinghouse Air Brake. He is a graduate engineer (B.S.E.E.), a certified Green Globes Professional, a LEED® AP with O+M specialty credential, a Certified Commercial Energy Auditor; a Florida Water Star Certifier; and a Qualified Commissioning Process Provider (QCxP).


Clark is the author of more than two dozen HVAC and energy related articles, is a frequent presenter and lecturer on a variety of green building topics, and is on the faculty of Lorman Education Services. He also writes the semi-monthly “Clark’s Remarks” column for HPAC Engineering and is a member of various professional organizations including ASHRAE, IEEE and USGBC (2011-2012 chair of Broward Green Schools Committee, 2014-2015 Chapter Advocacy chair, 2015-2018 Board member and Broward Chapter vice-chair). In addition, he serves on HPAC Engineering’s Editorial Advisory Board and the Smart Growth Partnership Board of Directors. Clark previously served on the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) Education Review Team, served six years on the City of Pompano Beach Recycling & Solid Waste Advisory Committee, and presently serves on the City of Fort Lauderdale Sustainability Advisory Board (Vice-Chair) and the Broward County Consumer Protection Board.


Other key team members:

Steven C. Bassett, PE, F.NSPE, is a mechanical engineer licensed in Florida and South Carolina who serves as SPS’ Director of Engineering. He has significant experience in sustainability and general mechanical engineering, with 45 years of mechanical and environmental engineering experience in building design and maintenance; due diligence inspections; design, permitting, and construction; forensic engineering; and facility operations. His project experience includes schools, hospitals, hotels, commercial offices, airports, churches and laboratories. Steve previously served 11 years on, and is currently a member of, the Florida Building Commission, and has served on both the Mechanical and Energy Technical Advisory Committees. He also served on the Florida Energy and Climate Commission during its last nine months of existence. Steve is a Fellow, Florida Engineering Society (FES); Fellow, NSPE; Member, ASHRAE; and a Member, USGBC South Florida. He has been active in the FES, holding all local chapter offices and has also served five terms as Southeast Vice-Chairman of Professional Engineers in Construction Practice Division of the NSPE, culminating with a term as Senior V.P. of Practice Divisions for NSPE. In 2002, Steve was recognized as Florida Professional Engineer of the Year by the FES and has been awarded the NSPE Distinguished Service Award for 2016. He is also a frequent lecturer for the FES, Indoor Air Quality Association and ASHRAE.

Michael Modica, CGC, CCIM, LEED AP+ is the principal of com-ESCO and has 18 years of construction and renovation, and facilities management experience. He previously served as principal of PropertyMD, a South Florida general contracting firm specializing in commercial and residential improvements to investment real estate. He is a certified commercial investment member (C.C.I.M), Certified Property Manager, a Licensed Certified Florida General Contractor and holds a LEED AP with O+M specialty designation. Mike is a member of BOMA Fort Lauderdale/Palm Beaches, the International Facility Managers Association (IFMA) and the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM).


Beau Chant Gallo, PE,
is a mechanical engineer with more than 15 years of construction experience. He has served in owner’s rep, project manager, construction administrator, mechanical and plumbing design, and commission roles. Recent projects include four high-rise buildings in Miami, and the Miami WorldCenter, a 10-block mixed-use development that is one of the largest private master-planned projects in the U.S.


Ross Lande, GGP,
is the team’s field technician, and is primarily responsible for data collection on existing building projects. In addition to holding a Green Globes Professional certification, he is also a qualified lighting auditor and has performed several lighting surveys as part of SPS’ energy audits and green building certifications.


Ann Rule, LEED GA,
is SPS’ and com-ESCO’s project administrator. She is a LEED Green Associate and a graduate of Florida State University. Since joining the team in June 2018, she has assisted in green building certification and commissioning on several new and existing building projects. She is also responsible for Energy Star data collection, and assists with analysis and onsite surveys.
